Walking home last night from watching ‘Beauty and the Beast’ at the National it struck me as forward thinking how a pagan symbol of the Christmas tree, a Victorian custom imported from Germany, stands firm in front of the religious icon of Westminster Abbey.  Contrasts are stunning especially late at night when taxi cabs are are thin on the ground unlike the frost.
