snow falls on martyrs memorial

In the middle of Broad St, Oxford is a cross marked on the road in bricks where the three protestant martyrs where burnt at the stake in 1555.  A Christmas Tree stands near there now where Latimer and Ridley burnt whilst Cranmer was forced to stand on the city wall and watch.  Cranmer called out ‘Be of brave heart master Ridley and play the man for we will today light such a candle that will never be put out’.  Cranmer was later burnt on the same spot.  He put the hand that had been forced to sign confessions into the flames first.  Seeing this tree today reminded me of how many people were martyred for their strong beliefs in this city.
