last drop

Enjoying a last sip of coffee on the Royal Mile where some of the last Scottish hangings took place.  Anne Green surprised Oxford’s medieval crowds and bounced back after her 30 minutes on the end of a noose in 1650.  The cause was thought to be the hand of God and so Anne was allowed to live on to explain the tale.  Others who later survived the drop without a snapped neck from a tight rope were not so lucky.  A return to the gallows was prescribed for those hung after Anne Green.  The hand of God was deemed to be a one time only event.
