looking out a dirty old window

from her tiny window Mary would have seen the scaffolding being set up for her execution.  Then it struck me - 1750’s glass was a new technology.  It’s only towards the Victorian era the debtors tower at Oxford Gaol had glass.  Letters have been recovered of the inmates begging the gaoler for glass to keep out the winter cold.  Mary must have been perishing.  No layers protected her from the sound of the men working on the gallows tree ready for her fall.
