what’s the point?

Oxford feels like the city of lost causes at dusk.  Not a cafe or museum to lift the spirits and trophies of a fight lost surrounds us.  The Martyrs’ Memorial above stands for the last breath Cranmer, Latimer and Ridley drew on Broad Street.  Colleges still have a few gaps in the buttery because Charles the first melted all the College owned silver ware down for armour.  Figures on the front of the quads are often given beards to change their identities from monastic icons to idols Henry the eighth would hold more sympathy with. I guess this ability to shift with the sands of time is one of the reasons this city is so full of well preserved architecture.  So one cause has most definitely been won, the stones are still standing!  Even if Charles the first who made Oxford his parliamentary town did lose his head.
