chicken - RUN!

Walking to the rehearsal for ‘The Idiot’ along Union Street, London we pass all of Theatreland’s greatest hits.  There is a man sleeping rough or queuing for tickets to see the play ‘Jerusalem’.  He is reading Tolstoy, has a flask and is later joined by two girls outside the Apollo Theatre.  The Michael Jackson show looks explosive.  Many of the musical tribute shows that the press do not review kindly on opening week now seem to be on their way to out running Agatha Christie’s ‘Mousetrap’ which is in its sixtieth year.  That’s staying power. Our show, ‘The Idiot’ is going to be performed for one night in Brighton.

‘The Idiot’ is my new play based on three women living alone during World War Two in the Lanes of Brighton.  Coping with the isolation of the black outs and the threats of invasion they get through the bombings with a gentle game of charades.  Their vulnerability is spotted by the army who recruit for scallywags to execute civilian justice on Brighton beach.  Will the girls become corrupted or will their bright shiny gun remain unused?

Right now, walking alongside all of the new shows opening this month in the West End we decide we would most like to see ‘The Ladykillers’.  The wallpaper of the theatre echoes the feel of the deserted room we are trying to recreate in our short play.  We do wonder how they do the scene where they chase the chicken though!
