bells ringing

Sea chimes on the sea front settle in as the wind whips past.  Even in peace time the breeze here takes the skin off your face.  The coast would have been dotted with anti-tank devices in the mid 1940’s and land mines not to mention razor wire would have been bedded down to stop Hitler crossing the Atlantic.  Thankfully the sea defences were never tested but it’s inspiring to imagine how the pleasure beach and hedonistic pier suddenly bounced back to life towards the end of the 1940s.  Some of Brighton’s coast line still carries the mark of war. There are bullet holes in some of the older buildings at the Marina.  The concrete hide out bunkers, ready to house trained spies in the event of invasion, are just at the edge of the rolling downs and are blissfully overflowing with sand.
