sky light

enough light to read by - just - goes into the old cells that were used as early as 1880.  this tiny window marks one of the results of John Howard’s reforms.  One cell per person meant a regime of discipline could be followed and hence reformation of character.  This window now blocked by an olive tree seems symbolic.  Few modern day prisons offer one cell per person so it feels like this ideal has lost its way.
