Retracing the steps of Civil War History to find the story about John Lilburne during his time in Oxford Gaol takes up the bank holiday.  Looking at maps of how England was fortified in the Civil War reveals a large number of forts around London.  This tall wall here is the Saxon equivalent and is part of the oldest wall in Oxford.  Every city seems to be held together at one point by a wall.
