haunted by housing

The haunted house on the pier looks more inviting than reading about the plight of the 500 people left homeless after Brighton’s war time blitz.  Just five minutes of bombing left complete social devastation.  It’s hard to find out from historical accounts how these homeless families coped during the war.  Ironically, to confuse the Luftwaffe, fake streets were created by stringing out lanterns so the bombs landed on open fields not real houses.  In reality, there was not enough homes to go around.  Part of the pier would have been closed off to avoid enemy landings with a warden on watch for approaching armies.  Thankfully this is a million miles away from the jolly bright lights that flicker on and off on the pier head today.  We are glad to leave our ride around the haunted house, shrieking at the cobwebs still on our faces!
