Shopping beside the choppy sea water and the Ship hotel for vintage clothes to bring our play to life on the stage via costumes, we spot the war memorial on the Steine.  Tall, elegant and simple; the space between the columns takes the breezy Brighton air in it stride, just like the brave soldiers that the monument honours.  The fountain bubbles yet seems still, like the throbbing weekend shoppers filling Churchill’s Square with a buzz that rings of modern life.  Everyone is busy yet going nowhere because they are lost in the crowd.  This is the feeling of dressing our characters. We are getting lost inside their thoughts in order to paint a picture of Brighton in 1943.  Walking in their footsteps along the Steine is a help.  Even if the crowd stops us moving along in the right direction.  If we are lost we are likely to find a new way out and for girls stuck in a tip and run attack any exit would be welcome.
