Snow made the castle look clean but when it melted the dirt of the bricks looked worse.  Ageing grime going back to the Norman conquest was not to be shifted by a British Winter and called for even taller stories as to how it got there.  Snow inspires briefly more powerful now it has gone.  It is hard to imagine the grey bricks as pristine white.  Nothing stays clean in the cobwebs.
